RE: Efficiency in Health Care Act

Karen,
Here are some articles that might be of interest on the matter:
HIMSS PROVIDES LAWMAKERS WITH INPUT ON BILLS TARGETED TO PROMOTE
HEALTHCARE EFFICIENCY AND PATIENT SAFETY
The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) is
publicizing its recommendations on bills currently in the legislative
process that address healthcare efficiency and patient safety. In recent
months, the organization has stepped up its efforts to bring its
expertise and knowledge to bear on healthcare legislation that could
affect the use of current and future information and management systems
in the healthcare setting. The comments are designed to identify
weaknesses in the bills. For example, a letter was sent to Sen. Edward
Kennedy (D-Mass), who has introduced the Efficiency in Health Care
(eHealth) Act of 2002 (S2638). The letter urges Kennedy to require
providers to electronically exchange claims transactions to reduce the
inefficiency of the current paper-based system, as well as provides
comments on privacy and confidentiality concerns raised by the
legislation.
Could Kennedy's Bill be the Next HIPAA?
Sen. Edward Kennedy's proposed legislation mandating provider and payer
use of information technology is part of an ambitious health care
agenda...

Subject: [EDI-L] Efficiency in Health Care Act
Hi all,
My boss has asked me to gather information on the proposed Efficiency
in Health Care Act sponsored by Edward Kennedy. He's heard that it
could be 'another HIPAA'. I'm not having much luck tracking down
details on the act. Does anyone know about this act, or have
suggestions of where I could look?
Thanks,
Karen
