Bonjour Wendie, not sure what you mean by 'backend'.
Supplier side or Customer side?

One thing I'm sure about is that the 997s have nothing to do with the actual
content of the document, a PO in your example.

A 997 is a DOCUMENT acknowledgement message, it only says 'this document
with control # (ISA/GS) such and such has been received and accepted'. It
cannot vouch for the validity of the quantities or the part number for
example. The 855 is used for that.

You are right that an EDI transmission should 'never' be touched by human
hands.
Every time we cut and paste a file to 'make it fit' into our application we
run the risk of having the whole thing blowup in our face (usually when the
trucks hits the receiving dock).

The 860 will complement your original PO, either by replacing it or
adding/subtracting to it. Again you should 'never' modify by hand a PO.

Remember that original PO will leave traces along the way; The original is
still in the customer application and the VAN (neutral third party) also has
a copy of it.

I'm sure others on the list are more knowledgeable and have a more
'legalistic' argumentation, but this is my rule of thumb understanding.

Any body willing to comment/correct/contradict, feel free.

Thanks,
