fancier directory structure with indexes I suspect it is unlikely to
change, since there are no advantages to doing other than starting at
the beginning and working through.

One of my colleagues was quite keen to do this. She can code SQL JOIN
queries which leave the rest of us struggling. We said "if it ain't bust
don't fix it", but to avoid accusations of sour grapes we promised her
that as soon as the directory accessing ever got anything out of
sequence she could implement it at high priority. Eight years on she is
still waiting.
