Having worked with AS2 over the past year I am
convinced that it will become the defacto
communications protocol for EDI in the future (when
flying cars are powered by XML). It compares very
favorably with the alternatives, async, FTP, AS1. And
putting aside the debate about VAN's I think it's
obvious that the Internet options will be stealing
their lunch for the forseeable future.
However the available software for AS2 seems immature
and pricey for what you get. Especially if one
expects to have to connect with dozens if not hundreds
of TP's. My plan is to implement the least expensive
'whatever works' for the Wal-mart situation, expecting
that much better programs for this application will be
coming in the next year or two.
