RE: EDIINT Advice

The Energy industry publicly adopted EDIINT AS2 for mission critical B2B in
1999.
Before you run out and buy an AS2 solution there are a few things you should
know.
1. Just because a product claims EDIINT AS2 "certification" that doesn't
mean it supports the full EDIINT AS2 specification.
AS2 defines two "profiles":
- UCC; uses mocked e-mail packaging and S/MIME V3
- Energy/Automotive; uses RFC 2388 standard HTTP packaging, and OpenPGP.
FYI - If you've ever sent a file to eBay, Yahoo or other web sites using
your web browser you've used the RFC 2388 standard.
The Energy and Automotive Industries have adopted the RFC 2388 option of AS2
so that trading partners can send files interactively using nothing more
than a web browser. If you've never seen an interactive AS2 web form upload
page go here:
http://www.tech-comm.com/as2upload.html
If you would like to send a file using the AS2 Energy/Automotive profile
click the "Browse" button and select a file to send, then click the Submit
button. To send encrypted/signed data simply run pgp or gpg before sending
your file.
NOTE: there is also an automated/scriptable way to send bulk data using the
Energy/Automotive profile of AS2, it's called a "batch browser".
2. The two profiles defined in AS2 are NOT interoperable
3. The DGI AS2 interoperability tests only test a limited subset of AS2
functionality (S/MIME Version 2 (not a typo) and mocked e-mail packaging).
The DGI tests did NOT test interoperability of the Energy/Automotive profile
in AS2.
4. To determine which profile of AS2 is best for you ask the following
questions:
Q1. Is cost a factor?
Q2. Do you want to support interactive file uploads?
Q3. Do you want to support automated bulk file uploading?
Q4. Do you require third party signed digital certificates (e.g. Verisign,
et al)
If you answered A1.yes, A2.yes, A3.yes and A4.no, then you should consider
using the Energy/Automotive profile of AS2.
If you answered A1.no, A2.no, A3.yes and A4.yes then you should consider
using the UCC profile of AS2.

Robert/Karen/Brian,
We are also looking at investing in the AS2 technology. We are looking at
several packages that offer much of the same functionality but what you have
to look out for are the extras. Here is a very small list of what questions
you might want to ask:
1. How many trading partners does your software package include and how
much for each additional one?
2. Do they offer a solution for your not-so-EDI-savvy "Mom and Pop"
shops?
3. Will the price include a person on site to help with on
integration/training?
4. And if you are even thinking about using UCCnet in the future for
DataSync compliance, is the package certified with the UCCnet to transport
data?
5. Does the software package only handle the transport of the data to
UCCnet or is it a fully functioning package that will not only handle the
data transport but also the data manipulation/validation?
6. Will you need to purchase new hardware for a dedicated AS2 server?
Hope this little list helps. Oh, by the way, we are looking at bTrade,
IPNet, iSoft, and Cyclone Commerce. As mandated by AS2 certification, all
this software should be independent of your platform.
Chris
