Renee,
I would suggest doing some homework as to what the current and future
EDI requirements are of your organization. I would suggest finding out
if there is an industry association for the business you are primarily
involved in. Participating in an industry association can give you
guidance as to future planning for your organization. You are doing a
major translator migration I would suggest having reference material
available for the X12 versions you are migrating in case there are
issues.

As was mentioned in an earlier email there are a number of products,
including our product Edifix that can be used to view these X12
standards electronically and create implementation guides from the
standards to fit your requirements. I am obviously biased but being
able to create and distribute implementation guides to trading partners
is a huge time saver.
The paper guides over time become full of Post-it notes and hand written
notes that make it a valuable document that is hard to back up and even
more difficult to find if you have more than one person using it.
Good luck.

This is probably a ridiculous question to those of you who have been
doing
EDI for quite some time but as I told you before I am quite new at this.
The latest hard copy of x.12 that we have in house is 003040. Should I
be
contacting DISA and getting a newer version? I realize it is expensive
so
I thought I should get some more profession advice from all of you. We
are
not members of DISA and I have been quoted $525 to get the 004050
version.
We are currently not running anything newer than 004030.

At present I am not sure how much new work I will be doing. I know we
hope to be migrating from Trading Partner TSI on the mainframe (which is
not supported) to Mercator or Gentran by 2003 year end.

Thanks for your help,

Renee Feitelberg
