RE: what book version of x.12 should I own
The X12 standards one purchases from DISA are NOT implementation guides.
Rather, they are the base standard on which many companies and industries
base their implementation guides.
Unless you have a need to implement an X12 transaction based on v004050, I
wouldn't purchase it. Rather, I'd purchase the base standards covering
versions of transactions you have or are planning to implement.
Furthermore, if you do purchase the X12 standards, don't buy the paper-based
one, buy the CD-ROM. These are equally searchable and printable and aren't
nearly in the price range of an EDISIM product.

I would think the company would want to spend the money to have the
implementation guides on the version you are trading at in house. It is
a good investment.

This is probably a ridiculous question to those of you who have been
doing
EDI for quite some time but as I told you before I am quite new at
this.
The latest hard copy of x.12 that we have in house is 003040. Should I
be
contacting DISA and getting a newer version? I realize it is expensive
so
I thought I should get some more profession advice from all of you. We
are
not members of DISA and I have been quoted $525 to get the 004050
version.
We are currently not running anything newer than 004030.
At present I am not sure how much new work I will be doing. I know
we
hope to be migrating from Trading Partner TSI on the mainframe (which
is
not supported) to Mercator or Gentran by 2003 year end.
