Gentran Integration Suite

Subject: Gentran Integration Suite
Hi All --

I appreciate all the comments and information regarding the Gentran
Integration Suite (yes, even the bad ones ! ). I'll be more forthright
with you why I dislike the anonymous recruiter postings EDI-L -- which
was really the point of my posting yesterday. In early Dec. 2002, I
began seeing a flurry of request from headhunters requiring experience
with the UNIX version of Gentran Integration Suite. In my opinion, all
these headhunters were the fly-by-night type, unprofessional, and in
many cases using the freebie anonymous email addresses with no other
contact info. I was able to talk to two or three of them. All of
them had a "client" that insisted on the UNIX Gentran Integration Suite,
several had very specific version numbers for the product and gui, they
were generally lacking in ecommerce knowledge, were very vague about
what their client was integrating it with (Oracle, SAP, etc.), or any
other details. I thought it smelled very fishy. I had not heard of the
Gentran Integration Suite, and I did some research.

At that time, the earliest mention I could find for the Gentran
Integration Suite product on the Sterling Commerce web site was in July,
2002 which announced (really a pre-announcement) they would be shipping
the UNIX version in Q42002 with other platforms to follow later. Here
is the URL (although it was gone when I checked it today):
http://www.sterlingcommerce.com/apps/pressreleases/ViewRelease.asp?ReleaseID=429

I ran the product tutorial (Gentran Integration Suite Web Seminar)
(Dated 11-17-02),
http://www.sterlingcommerce.com/Apps/Events/Archives.asp
NOTE: The trainer indicating that the product had been shipped within
the month. At that time, there were no training classes for the
Gentran Integration Suite offered by Sterling.

I find it very fishy that there are so many Gentran Integration Suite
clients with a product that JUST shipped are looking for consultants to
help with their (very vague) implementation, and they MUST have Gentran
Integration Suite experience (& not just the core product). Therefore,
(you can call me crazy) I've concluded that many of these "recruiters"
are a front for a band of international software pirates (or worse) that
have targeted the Gentran Integration Suite for development. This is
why I dislike the anonymous recruiting posting on EDI-L (or anyplace
else).

Finally, to focus on the technical perspective. Here is the URL for
the product info:

http://www.sterlingcommerce.com/solutions/products/ebi/integrator/gis.html

Basically, the core product is the current Gentran version and
Sterling's own literature states that you do not have to migrate to the
new Suite if your version is current, but the existing client can add
extensions which are better integrated with the core product: XML,
RosettaNet, AS2, ebXML, etc, etc. My comments in the previous email
were misleading (I was recalling from memory my December research) and
I stand corrected.

Regards,
Susan Stecklair
