Press Release 01/03, January 30, 2003
Data Modeling and XML Schema Support for E-Business and EDI Applications
in EDIFIX 5.0
(Berlin Jan 30, 2003) GEFEG, a leading provider of e-business
productivity tools, announces the release of GEFEG EDIFIX® 5.0. This
release has come as a result of customer feedback and participation in
numerous e-business standards organizations. Working closely with
standards organizations has allowed EDIFIX 5.0 to have features that
reflect the newest work of these organizations. Some of these
organisations use GEFEG EDIFIX® to develop their standards.
GEFEG has enhanced its software for the professional preparation of
e-business and EDI applications with data modeling functions and XML
schema documentation support. GEFEG EDIFIX® now contains a range of
functions to cover the complete area of operations for e-business
applications based on XML. XML standards, like OAGIS® and xCBL® are
included in the scope as made available to the public by the originating
organizations. GEFEG EDIFIX® is the software of choice for the creation,
specification and validation of B2B standards and custom message
implementation guidelines.
The business requirements of companies and standards bodies have been
subject to a change due to the growing popularity of XML. GEFEG EDIFIX®
offers state-of-the-art functions which facilitate the implementation of
XML for e-business.
Data Modeling
* The structure and the contents for business transactions, like
elements, enumeration values, code lists, etc. used in a business
process are documented in a data model. The transparent representation
of the data model as a class diagram improves the understanding of the
contents for e-business specialists and business analysts likewise.
* Data models are generally created syntax neutral. Use any given
B2B syntax, like OAGIS, or X12, for further specification according to
your companys requirements. Also the data model is ready for the
technical implementation in different standards with individual
syntaxes.
* The use of data models is an excellent means to ensure that the
e-business implementation is consistent in different syntaxes, like XML
and/or EDI standards.
XML Schemas
* Create your own business XML schema from scratch, or deploy
existing XML standards. Alternatively the XML schema is built by
derivation from a data model.
* Describe the conditions when and how a definite element is used
in notes directly connected to the element itself.
* E-business applications with traditional EDI standards can
easily be migrated to XML schemas when they are described in a message
implementation guideline.
XML standards
* OAGIS, xCBL and UBL are available for immediate use with EDIFIX.
The range of XML standards will be continuously extended. If a definite
XML standard is required, please contact us (see below for contact
info).
EDI standards
* Data models can also be used with conventional EDI standards,
like X12, or EDIFACT, or EIDX/EDIFICE etc. The custom guideline is
derived from the data model.
Established, proven functions for the documentation and validation are
applicable for EDI and XML formats.
GEFEG EDIFIX® 5.0 is currently available in an EARLY-Release version.
Its finalization is scheduled for July this year. Please contact David
Frenkel ( or email us at GEFEG ( for
