So if I get this correctly .. you define the flat file layouts for your
applications to use, and somebody else writes the maps that turn the EDI
into the format you have defined. However, while you are waiting for them,
you have some files in 850 format you want to turn into test data. How am I
doing?
If this is the case, what you can easily do is create a program that reads
in the segments one by one, splits them into elements using the delimiter
(trivial in perl, a loop in BASIC using the INSTR and MID functions), pads
them and concatenates them in the right order to create flat file records.
Having done that, you end up with a single purpose program. Next 850
trading partner might require reworking 80% of the program. By the time you
work up to 10 trading partners (on your way to 100), that $10K price on that
mapper doesn't sound so high anymore.
My point in saying this is even if I had been able to find my old program
(which I couldn't, alas) it would not have saved you that much time, because
these programs tend to be so specialized.

To all:
As a point of clarification, let me explain more of my position here at Dell
and; with the type of responses I am receiving, perhaps I should not have
sent the question.
I am new to edi technology, but not to I/T. I transition (one month
ago)into a branch of EDI here at Dell and we set up the mapping for I/T,
then they do the work. They have all the tools (and monies for the
translators - we do not). Once the mapping is set up we can run the test
850's through. However, it is nice to get a test file prior to their work
effort. Some here can create a flat file using an excel spreadsheet with an
export into a delimited file. I can not - not yet. As coming from a code
writing team, I know the translation can be done via a M/S product. I just
don't have the time right now...

PS - I joined the group to get up to speed on the technology and verbiage.
It has helped; I sometimes have more information then the rest of my team!
