If you purchased some kind of Gentran 'kit' or 'package' the definition of the
"source" file or input database is controlled by Gentran and the documentation
should be available to you.

If you did not license some kind of 'kit' or 'package,' you get to design the
'source' file yourself.

Just from experience, I'd set up the source file so your claims data appear in
the input file in the order in which you will need them to create the 837
segment by segment, in segment order. (Or with a sort key you can use to do so
at run time). This is what I've done for all my outbound EDI work including the
'837' and it has served me well.

Instead of an external sort key, you could create a keyed source file if
Gentran/Unix handles keyed input. (I don't know about Gentran Unix, but
Gentran/MVS and Gentran/400 both handle keyed input).
