RE: gentran on unix

They are very different. The client and the mapping tool are inferior to
the Windows tool, from what I've seen and been told. (I've only ever worked
on the Unix version and I'm now on the mainframe version.) The back-end
Unix engine is extremely reliable, but the client tool, frankly, [expletive deleted].
Of course, that was my opinion before I started on the mainframe package.
Now I'd give almost anything to be back on the unix platform. :-{)
I don't know of any resources, short of the training class that Sterling
offers, that could help you. You'd be very well off knowing some unix
scripting (shell scripts; maybe some awk or perl too) and the filesystem
basics before you get started. You don't have to go nuts and build your
own Linux system, just enough to know where stuff is and how basic unix
utilities work. The front end mapper you'll just have to deal with when you
get to the shop.
