RE: HIPPA - 834 ENROLLMENT TRANSACTION

Mike,
It sounds like many health plans are 'requesting' that employers send
health plan enrollment information in a HIPAA compliant 834 transaction.
It appears you are not what HIPAA would to refer to as a covered entity
so you are not required to use the HIPAA transactions. For various
reasons you might be a covered entity so I would talk to your legal
counsel who hopefully has heard of HIPAA.
Look at www.wpc-edi.com for the HIPAA EDI guidelines. They are free.
Another good source of information is www.wedi.org and there is a good
listserv for questions at http://snip.wedi.org .
Good luck.

Subject: [EDI-L] HIPPA - 834 ENROLLMENT TRANSACTION
I have seen some inquiries on the list regarding the 834 for HIPPA. Is
it
true that a company offering health care plans for its employees must
send
the 834/Enrollment transaction to providers by October 2003? If so,
where
can I find more information about this topic and where are downloadable
implementation specs located?
Thanks,
