RE: Average Cost question

Each VAN has multiple pricing schedules and ways of billing for a number of
services. Often this is very confusing, particularly if you haven't
re-negotiated your agreement recently. The good news is that the
introduction of the Internet into the equation has enabled VANs to reduce
their infrastructure costs. This has resulted in highly competitive service
rates if you connect to them via IP. Creative pricing like unlimited
documents for X number of trading partners at a fixed cost is available from
at least one VAN.

Subject: [EDI-L] Average Cost question
Hi All,
I've been asked the dreaded question of how much it costs to send and
receive a document from our customer. I have my month mailbox charges and
as usual am charged per character. How do I determine how many
characters is in a document? Is it every segment or element? That just
doesn't seem to make sense with the numbers I am seeing.
If anyone can give me a quick idea of how to determine this, I would be
very thankful. In particular, they are questioning invoices but I'm sure
the other documents are going to come up as well.
Thanks!!
