RE: direct internet EDI or internet VAN

Implementing AS2 is not particularly difficult and the packages currently
available make it fairly easy to manage all of the X.509 certificates and
security policies of your trading partners. Of course you do need to insist
if you're doing direct connections with all of your partners that all of
them invest in an AS2 solution as well - and you need to test with each of
them individually too while they figure out how AS2 is supposed to work.
One advantage of working with a VAN, internet or otherwise, is that they
typically support a number of different connection types to accommodate
different business requirements and budgets, so you can connect to them via
the Internet and your trading partners can connect directly to them via
their preferred protocol or can interconnect from another VAN altogether.
Obviously there are financial incentives and others, like immediacy, to
doing an AS2 implementation and using direct connects with trading partners.
That's why you see Wal-Mart and other big retail operations headed in that
direction.

Subject: [EDI-L] direct internet EDI or internet VAN
We are currently deciding whether to implement direct AS2 connections with
our customers or if we should instead use an Internet VAN, and I wanted to
ask what everyone though about these two options. What is the most
difficult / time-consuming part of establishing & maintaining direct AS2
connections, and would it be more worthwhile to use an Internet VAN to
manage the connections? We have about 50 trading partners that we are
thinking about converting. Is there even a need for an Internet VAN if we
can just do the AS2 connections on our own? Is there anyone out there
using
an Internet VAN, and what services / features do they offer that you find
most helpful when doing EDI over the Internet? Or is EDI over the
Internet
too new for adequate reliability? Lots of questions! Please help us to
understand your experiences with these two options???
