This is a little confusing. The 846 is the inventory inquiry/advice report,
the 867 is the product transfer and sale report while the 852 is the product
activity report and is used for both sales and inventory information.

A couple of questions need to be answered here. Is your application
software really generating an X12 846 document or just the flat file that is
processed by an EDI translator/mapper into an 846?

Are your trading partners satisfied with the information that can be
conveyed in each document? Do you know? Are your users satisfied with the
information? Do you know?

It sounds like you need a better understanding of the purpose and uses of
the information on the application side as well as trading partner
expectations and capabilities before you can answer the question.

Report

We are looking to implement a consignment module and
our software generates an 846. The other half of our
company runs on different software and they use an 867
for consigned material.

I've talked with a couple of people here and there
doesn't seem to be a whole lot of difference, from
what I can tell, between the two.

We just installed our consigment module and I haven't
had a chance to mess around with it yet.

Wanted to throw this question out to all of you to see
what you use and if there's a benefit in using one
transaction vs. the other.

I'm basically looking to see if it's going to be worth
all the work to make our system generate an 867 rather
than an 846, which it currently does.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Nicole
