Re: X12 sees the writing on the wall.

I'll be preaching to the choir, I'm sure, but please put aside the big
bass drum for a few minutes and let's look at the situation
dispassionately.
What I'm waiting for in particular is my upper management to sign off
on some of the glitzy way-cool things that you talk about.
Let's be honest here. We can get rid of the manuals because we have
CD-ROMs of the stuff. But the standards -- like legacy code -- are
going to be around for a good long while. Some companies can't afford
to make the switch right away. Heck, we're "upgrading" to a 3 year
old OS on our mainframe -- and you can bet that we're doing it only
because we're being prodded to.
Does that mean we're turning a blind eye to the new technologies?
Heck no. We have WebMethods, even, and are using it to implement some
WayCoolStuff as an integration layer between some old fashioned
platforms and some new stuff that we're rolling out now.
HOWEVER --
The way that we pay the bills to do this -- at least for the immediate
future -- is by submitting good old EDI 810 messages and receiving EDI
820 transactions in return.
Because we are, by our very nature, reactive. We are trying to be
proactive in some respects but when you're the supplier there's only
so much you can do.
We'll learn from our WM experiences, I'm sure -- and be in that much
better shape when it comes time to throw that Big Red Switch on the
Sterling mainframe translator.
And you can bet I'll be first in line to do it.
But until then, that 820 coming in pays MY salary, too.
