Re: Repetition Seperator ISA-11

I've not worked with any transaction sets that use it, but I can
tell you what it is. Repeating data elements were introduced in
004020 to make the X12 syntax more similar to ISO 9735 V4 used in
EDIFACT. Data elements don't repeat automatically; the X12 segment
in which an element (simple or composite data structure) is used
must indicate that the data element is allowed to repeat. If I recall
correctly, no such segments existed until around release 004040.
The Repetition separator is used to delimit the occurences of such
a data element that is allowed to repeat, similar to the way in which
the data element separator delimits data elements in a segment.
It is not quite true that *any* hex character is allowed for the
repetition separator - only those characters in the basic or extended
character sets defined in X12.6 are allowed, provided of course that
your repetition separator is neither in the data nor used as one
of your other delimiters. In practical terms, this means that it
must be a character from the set of delimiters you are usually accustomed
to working with.
