EDI and electronic claims processing in healthcare

I am looking into EDI based electronic claims
processing and need to find out how widely used
EDIFACT is in Europe for the exchange of claims and
other healthcare related information between payers
and providers?

Also, are there any national or Europe wide
regulations for this equivalent to the X12N standard
that is mandated in the USA?
