RE: <Tech> Back to EDI-to-FAX and OCR

Standardization is the key, what if you were to provide those customers a
form (that you design) where they could input the items they want to order,
and then fax to you.
If the form is given to them in such a way that they could type in the
information using their PC or a typewriter, you reduce the errors because of
handwriting.
If you design the form then the data you receive will always be in the same
location each time. This way you can dictate how the data is to be
submitted.

Subject: RE: [EDI-L] <Tech> Back to EDI-to-FAX and OCR
Any way to get business in the door would seem a good thing. It occurs to
me, however, that like with electronic document exchange, the biggest
obstacle to OCR is standardization (or, more specifically, lack thereof).
At least in theory, paper orders could come in dang near any format and on
any type of paper. Narrowing down to "good" quality documents (I assume
that means cleanly printed with no smudges and no dodgy letter formations
or
odd fonts), you still have the problem of telling what's what on the form.
Next question is what kind of form is it? Does the seller demand that all
ordering parties use their standard form or do they accept any kind of
order
form...perhaps even a personal order letter... Cool, so now which part of
the data is which? Where's the quantity, the description, the prices (if
present) the ship to address, etc.
Assuming there's no standardization in the forms, your OCR program can
return data to you, but it's gonna be a custom job sorting it out for each
form.

I had a strange call today, someone wants to actually start using OCR to
take tose orders that are not EDI. Most of them are mail but some are
FAX.
I gues I was shocked when I heard the question since I couldn't come up
with
the reasons why not to do it. I know there are plenty of opinionated
people
here who will tell me why not. What are the biggest obsacles to OCR even
if the quality of the document is good?
