Subject: EDI/FAX/OCR responses
I run a third party service bureau specializing in data translation. Our
specialty is extracting data using OCR and ICR (handprint) information and
turning it into processable EDI transactions. This process is truly brutal and
takes a lot of human intervention.

By the way, what you all have been describing in your mails is a FAX-to-EDI
problem and not an EDI-to-FAX problem(mostly an automated process).

The information that has been posted has been right on. OCR is not a tool that
is geared to high volume applications unless you are utilizing standard
pre-printed forms. OCR is never (and I mean never) an automated process. It
requires much manual intervention and return on investment in large applications
(if you attempt to do it internally) is rarely achieved.

We have been in the business for over 10 years and have invested over 3 million
dollars and thousands of hours of sweat. We have been relatively succesful at
accepting faxed and scanned documents, but not without a lot of pain and
learning many things we never dreamed over the years.

I agree with the other gentlemen who mentioned that implementing this inhouse
will not be a succesful venture unless you standardize the forms and try not to
disturb the current business process.

Keep it simple and if not, it is not worth doing alone.

We have been successful because we have standardized and helped SME's migrate to
simple technologies that will allow them to send data to all their trading
partners whether it is by fax, email, FTP or through the WEB. We work with
their current software and build translation interfaces so they do not have to
re-key information already entered into their backend. We translate it and
forward the data to their trading partners.

We have succesfully implemented invoicing, purchase order, survey, psycological
testing and sales analysis solutions throughout North America and all because we
have respected the current business process and catered to the lowest common
denominator from a technological perspective. We are specialist in EDI, SAP,
Peoplesoft data integration and will cater to proprietary formats on request.

It can work if it is simple. OCR is not simple so I agree with the others in
telling you to seriously consider other alternatives or working with a partner.

If I can be of any other service, please do not hesitate to contact me.
