Are you also saying that I could get GIS so that I teach myself this tool? A
demo/free/no cost?
I am currently looking for a new opportunity. I have worked with Gentran
for Windows but not GIS. I would like to make myself more marketable by
learning GIS. Is this feasible with MySQL?

First of all, I agree with Dan; if you have experience with EDI and Visual
Basic already and are a quick learner, I would think that you would have
plenty of opportunities out there based on your potential. Because you
must know how to manipulate EDI data within a Visual Basic application,
that tells me that you have a deep knowledge of EDI data structures and
will be able to pick-up most any kind of GUI translation package quickly.
I would hope that others on this list might also see that, although
whether or not anyone on here is looking for new staffers I don't know.
As far as 'emulating a UNIX box', there are plenty of open source UNIX
variants in the market today, all of which are available at no cost for
you. Linux is first of all an excellent choice (free downloads available
at http://fedora.redhat.com/ and http://www.debian.com/), as is FreeBSD
(http://www.freebsd.org/). FreeBSD is based on original BSD code and was
developed at the University of California at Berkeley, where a lot of the
original work on the UNIX TCP/IP stack (later Windows sockets) was done.
If Solaris is your thing, Sun offers a free personal edition of sorts.
I've also learned that Sterling's GENTRAN Integration Suite runs on MySQL,
a free UNIX and Win32 database platform availabe at http://www.mysql.com/.
You can also find a System/370, ESA/390, and z/Architecture emulator
called Hercules at http://www.conmicro.cx/hercules/, if you're interested.
I don't know much about this, but I'm sure lots of people on the list will
be very familiar with the architectures this package can emulate for you.
Want to learn COBOL? TinyCOBOL is at http://tiny-cobol.sourceforge.net/.
If nothing else, I hope this might spark some curiosity!
