As my good friend William J. Kammerer suggests, the UN/LOCODE - United Nations
Code for Trade and Transport Locations - is the code list most used in the
maritime industry, and is available at
http://www.unece.org/cefact/locode/service/main.htm. This list is developed in
synch with the airport codes developed through the International Air Transport
Association (IATA), so they are virtually the same for any port city with an
airport. In the case of cities with multiple airports, you will find there is
a code in UN/LOCODE for the city itself as well.
