That was always my understanding too. In my little niche of the EDI
world the term is, unfortunately, often used to describe a tagged
structured file in Standard Data Format (fields starting at a defined
column and of a defined length). This contrasts to EDI, which is a
tagged structured delimited file with 2 levels of delimiter.

Incidentally, I discovered xmlLinguist recently and liked it so much
that I bought a copy, but I do not think it is a very suitable tool for
generating or translating conventional EDI. We shall continue to use a
conventional converter at the sharp end.
