<OFF-TOPIC>Globalization with Justice

Hi.
A lot of issues have been pushing a lot of buttons lately, and there have
been many threads that we know are not EDI-specific. I know some people
would like to see that discussion taken somewhere else. There's a lot of
anger out there ... as someone laid off after 22 years of service with a
major corporation, I know that anger initimately. I know that people need
to say the things they've been saying.
What can we do with this? I know that what we DON'T want is to replace one
injustice with another injustice. To blame others because of where they
live is an injustice. Those of us who have lost jobs have lost them to
people who also need to live, sometimes under far from fair working
conditions. But to silence the voices of those who are hurting would also
be an injustice.
I personally track these messages very carefully. As a person seeking
ordination as a deacon in the Episcopal Church, it will be part of my
ministry to see that the church hears about the concerns of the world. I
take what I see on the EDI-L list and it becomes part of the discussion at a
small group I belong to called "Globalization with Justice (GWJ)." I was
invited to join that group after the convener saw an article I wrote in our
diocesan newspaper. Writing the article was one way of coping with being
outsourced and offshored out of lifetime employment. Go to
http://www.ecrweb.org/page/page/264955.htm, the select October 2003. The
article is entitled "Who's to Blame?," subtitled "Exporting the Economy."
I'm not sure that setting up another group for this dicussion will prevent
these threads from occurring on EDI-L. There's a Yahoo Group on corporate
ethics called http://groups.yahoo.com/group/corp-ethics/ that some may be
interested in, but it's more intellectual discussion, moderated, and still
would not give folks a place to vent their concerns.
Meanwhile, while we think about whether it would be worthwhile to set up or
locate another forum for these concerns, I do want to hear from you. You
can help me with GWJ group concerns. Our group is in California,
encompassing Silicon Valley and the Central Coast. We're living in a place
where the independent consultants outnumber the securely employed at various
eBusiness user group forums. GWJ is in the learning mode right now. Social
justice projects go through phases, starting with learning about the issue.
Sometimes this leads to ideas for action and sometimes not. Right now, we
are trying to come up with a description of what "ethical capitalism" is and
to describe what the characteristics of an ethical corporation are. How do
we balance the need for strong local economies with the need to see an end
to poverty and oppression in so-called "3rd world" areas? Send me your
thoughts, regardless of your country, race, religious creed, political
creed, etc. I want to hear every perspective. I may not be able to respond
to every message, but I will hear you.
Peace,
