RE: <MISC> Resumes-Ones That Work

Hi Dan,
Having been a hiring manager, and in my current position working for a
staffing/consulting services company, I have seen it all. I have some
definite ideas toward what works and what doesn't work.
These days there is no right or wrong way to format a resume. You name
the flavor and we've seen it.
In short, it always helps to have a statement of your objective,
followed by a summary of your experience. Sections detailing h/w, s/w,
etc. should follow. Of course, work history should come next - no
salary figures. End with education and professional affiliations.
References provided upon request.
You need to differentiate your resume from hundreds of other resumes
that will flow onto someone's desk or desktop. We recommend customizing
resumes based on the position - highlight accordingly. Keep it short
and include ample white space. One glance is all your resume will get
before it goes into either the follow-up or circular folder.
I can tell you from personal experience that spelling errors can be
fatal - at least for me. No need for errors - they illustrate a lack of
detail and thoroughness. Another tip, you want to make sure that
Internet searches based on keywords and acronyms can find you. For
example, if you have GXS Application Integrator experience, you might
want to list it as GXS AI as well.
I offer free assistance to anyone who wants help or a critique of their
resume - no strings attached, just glad to help a fellow EDIer. My home
office number is below.

Subject: [EDI-L] <MISC> Resumes-Ones That Work
I've been going through the postings today. After meeting a few
people
from the list yesterday at the AITP meeting in Rolling Meadows, I'm
going to
keep most of my postings on a more serious note.
That being said, what works in a Resume? I've seen and tried
several
styles, but they don't seem to sell the true me to prospective
employers.
I'm 25 years out of college, and have been continuously employed (I
include
my time as an independent contractor) the entire time. With the world
as it
is, it is prudent to clean up the mess I have called my Resume.
Also, what are the thoughts about Salary Histories?
Thanks,
Dan Mehlhorn,
Enquiring upon behalf of me, myself, I and the 6 cats I support.
