Contrary to the CNET article that suggests that Microsoft is going to "prevent
competing applications from processing documents created with the latest version
of the software giant's Office program", the patent seems to be taking credit
for all the cool things Microsoft has come up with. Among other things, the XML
schema is smart enough to so completely describe a word document that you can
recreate the exact original word document. To them, that is worth patenting.
That does not imply you and I can't write code to process the XML.
Of course, I am no patent lawyer.

I assume you're wondering what ANSI ASC X12 is going to do, since DISA
is just the secretariat for X12. I'm sure some fine attorney could
tell us the difference between a patented XML format and a copyrighted
XML format, but as far as I'm concerned there's little practical
difference. The current X12 standards are already copyrighted, and
I'm pretty confident that X12's new XML standards will also be
copyrighted. What matters is not whether something is copyrighted or
patented, per se, but the terms of use. Based upon what I'm seeing in
X12 so far, the new XML standards will be copyrighted but licensed for
free use, which is the customary practice for most similar standards.
