Re: ISA - x12 version 004060

Rob, why do you leave us guessing about what you actually received? I
suppose that's easier than showing us character for character this
strange ISA so we might know what you're trying to describe.
But, no, no "extra 1 character field" has been added to the ISA - it has
always had 16 data elements. Use of two data elements have changed from
the very earliest days. For example, ISA16 is now the Component Element
Separator and ISA11 is now the Repetition Separator (in the 00406 ISA).
Make sure they are unique, and ensure neither matches the data element
separator (right after the ISA segment tag in the 4th character).
Are you saying that you've received an extra data element? Or just an
extra character? I'm suspicious because you keep saying "004060" with
respect to the ISA. ISA12, the Interchange Control Version Number,
should just have *5* characters, something like "00406" (without the
extra zero). The Interchange Control Version Number gives the version of
the standard describing the ISA itself, the IEA and any TA1s. The GS
would carry the Version / Release / Industry Identifier Code describing
the version and release of the functional groups and the transaction
sets contained within (e.g., "004060").
No, there aren't supposed to be any "online specs" for the ISA. X12
(through its secretariat, DISA) keeps all this stuff under lock and key
so you're forced to buy their book or CD.

Subject: [EDI-L] ISA - x12 version 004060
Where can I get online specs for the ISA format in version 004060? The
company I am contracting with is receiving 004060 850's from a large
trading partner that contain an extra 1 character field. Our Sterling
Commerce, Gentran, software seems to handle the change but it messes up
the archive process.
Does x12 version 004060 actually add a one character field to the ISA?
I always thought this segment could not be altered because the last
three characters define the format of the following segments.
Thanks,
